A graphic for the Critical Minerals Hub at Duke University shows its component parts. At the center of the wheel: the critical minerals index, Bass Connections class, and research products. The next ring includes: materials design (synthesis and simulation), geochemistry, waste-to-resource processes, geopolitics, innovation and commercialization, mineral and elemental spectroscopy, policy and economics, and energy systems. The next ring includes Duke infrastructure: shared materials instrumentation facility (SMIF), Bass Connections, Duke Materials Initiative (DMI), Duke Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability; and Pratt Community-based Innovation. The outermost ring includes External Partners: Academic Institutions, Regional Communities, Federal and State Agencies, Industry Partners, Non-profit Research Organizations, and Economic Development Agencies.

CRITICAL MINERALS HUB

The Hub will synthesize knowledge across engineering, the natural sciences, and social sciences regarding different critical minerals along their entire life cycle (i.e., from extraction of conventional and unconventional resources to processing, utilization, and reuse) to develop a resilient multi-dimensional ecosystem for managing demand and supply in the short term and reducing critical minerals dependence over the long term. The Hub will address the geopolitical, scientific, environmental, social, commercial, and technical aspects of novel solutions to ensure socio-economic benefits and added value.

Research

The Hub is a vibrant, central platform in which Duke faculty and students of all levels work collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries to address the integrated, complex, and urgent challenges we face in sustainably securing and managing critical mineral resources for strategic technology systems and national security.

Education

Our education activities are deeply integrated with Hub research and external partners. The Critical Minerals Bass Connections project will serve as the cornerstone of educational activities.

Partnerships

Faculty and students working together with regional government, federal, industry, and community partners to identify opportunities for achieving a resilient critical minerals system and codify tractable solutions.
